Statement
Since I was a child I have been interested in creating small universes; therefore it seemed natural that I found myself drawn to mixed media and assemblage. In my work I explore themes of symbolism, time, myth, and religion. I search for and integrate into my work found objects from many world cultures that seem evocative of a particular place and time. Old maps and celestial charts are important references. I inspired by rich materials: gold leaf, glass, beads, mosaic tiles, beautiful papers, embroidered fabrics -- I am always looking. An important influence on my work has been the time I have spent in Europe, particularly in the British Isles, and the many summers spent in Florence, Italy. The countless photos I have taken there over the years serve as important source material. After a recent visit to the stamp market in Paris, I have become interested in postage stamps as small and beautiful metaphors of travel through space and time, and have been integrating these images into my smaller works.
Biography
After graduating with a B.F.A. in painting from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, I received an M.A. in Art History/ Librarianship from the University of Michigan. Before moving to Asheville, I worked as an Art Conservator in Cincinnati, Ohio, and spent many summers in Florence, Italy. I was involved for several years in running my own gallery in the Main Street Art District in Cincinnati and I maintained a studio in the Pendleton Art Center. My work has been shown in Chicago and in the Cincinnati area. In 2011, I relocated to Asheville where I am enjoying being able to devote myself full time to my own work.
